Birmingham – Burnley

Birmingham are finishing very successful season for them. However, they’re in a bad run of results with eight games without a win and four consecutive draws at home. In previous round, lost a derby game vs. Villa, despite very good display. If they fail in last two games, theoretically could lost four places. Side-back, Stephen Carr, is banned for one match in light of the gestures he made at Aston Villa. Striker Christian Benitez may feature after a six-game absence.

.

Burnley booked their ticket to Championship long time ago. Their Premiership story came to end when Owen Coyle left the club. Everything after that have been just torturing the fans. Chairman Barry Kilby said, thankfully to this season they won’t have any financial worries in next 10 years. If it was a target, ok then. Regarding their performances, without Coyle they’re just an average Championship squad. With new manager, Brian Laws (have picked up just 7 points from a possible 48 since he took the charge) they’re even less than that. They stopped winning at home, while on the road have 16 defeats of 18 games (goal difference 16-50)! Haven’t noticed a clean sheet in 25 games and need to concede against Brum to equal Wimbledon's Premier League record from 11 years ago. Defender Clarke Carlisle is absent again.

This is the last home game for Birmingham and I think after unfair defeat in derby game, they’ll want to put some effort and play for the fans. Difference in quality are big as well. Burnley will play for the scouts and I can’t see any improving. Bet is Birmingham -1 ah @ 1.92 Pinnacle.

EL thoughts

Fulham should be favorite in the first fixture. Zamora isn’t fit, but will play. Great home record in Europe, one draw (Shakthar) and all other wins. This is the most important game in their lives.
Hamburger sacked Labadia, players definitely feel better. Decent German team with some very good players, Petric, Berg, Jansen, ZeRoberto, van Nistelroy.
The problem is final game is in Hamburg. Last season old farts from FIFA and UEFA were saying the interest of football is Barcelona to play in CL final (???!!!). So, this season interest of football (read: tv rights, advertising, bigger attendance, lack of Englishmen in town…) could be Hamburg to play at home. So would like to see Fulham in the final, but my vote goes for German side.

Liverpool - Atletico M. To be honest, have no idea about this one. Liverpool should progress, all season is in this game. But it could be the end of one (Rafa’s) era as well. Vote for Liverpool.

No bets, I’ve been just wasting my money lately.

P.s.: It was offside, right?

CL thoughts and 1 EUR bet

Regarding tonight's game.I was thinking about one gamble,Lyon -1.5 at 5.00.We were witnesses in past seasons and in recent one, they can defeat anybody at home. But,to be honest, they hardly score more than once. And to score twice without conceding against Bayern? On the other hand, lots deppend from Robben. He buried Fiora,Man Utd and scored in the first game.Fourth time?Probably possibility with a higher percentage than first one. After some thinking,my potential bet looked like money wasting. Will put 1-3EUR on 1-2 ht/ft @ 34.00 for fun and that's it.:) Scenario:Lyon scoring first,Bayern show the class in the 2nd half and Robben equalizing,all-in,counter attack, all end.

Crystal Palace 1-1 West Brom

West Brom denied Crystal Palace the chance of securing their Championship status, handing relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday a reprieve.
Palace, who need a buyer by the end of the season, went ahead when Steven Reid sliced a free-kick into his own net.
But the Baggies drew level inside four minutes when Gabriel Tamas headed home a Chris Brunt left-wing free-kick.
Palace, who had Neil Danns sent off for a headbutt, now face a relegation showdown at Wednesday on Sunday.
With the Owls having lost 3-2 at Cardiff on Saturday, Palace knew three points against West Brom on Monday would have been enough for them to avoid relegation to League One.
But the south Londoners failed to take their chance, meaning that a season to forget - during which they have been docked 10 points as a result of falling into administration and lost manager Neil Warnock to Queens Park Rangers - will be decided by a visit to Hillsborough.
Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer echoed round Selhurst Park before kick-off but during an engrossing game the home side's players fought tooth and nail to be the masters of their own fate.
They gave themselves the perfect start when Darren Ambrose's well-placed right-wing free-kick was sliced past his own keeper by Reid from six yards.
But Paul Hart's men were pegged back four minutes later when Tamas headed the visitors level.
However, in the last 10 minutes the Eagles twice had chances to make sure of the points only for substitute Stern John to head wide at the back post before, six minutes into injury time, Marek Cech cleared an Ambrose effort off the line.
That Palace were even in a position to potentially snatch a winner late on was a testimony to both the wastefulness of the dominant visitors and the superb performance from home keeper Julian Speroni.
The Argentine stopper produced a string of saves to deny the Baggies, most notably to keep out Chris Brunt from close range, tip over a dipping 35-yard effort from Graham Dorrans in the first half and block well-struck efforts from Cech and Youssouf Mulumbu in the second.
In addition, West Brom striker Roman Bednar missed a number of good opportunities, heading a Dorrans cross against the bar and then shooting harmlessly wide after being released by the same player.
After Danns was shown a straight red by referee Dean Whitestone for headbutting Dorrans it seemed certain that West Brom would make their numerical advantage count.
But they were unable to do so, and Palace's own late profilgacy in front of goal means they face a long, nervous final game of the season in Sheffield.
As long as Hart's men, who have a two-point advantage over Wednesday, avoid defeat they will beat the drop, sending the Owls down.

Crystal Palace – WBA

Well, I won’t suggest anyone to follow this bet. The thing is I really like to gamble and taking this one is much more tempting for me than trying to find a treble in Scandinavia at Monday. And I’m still a little bit annoyed because didn’t have guts to take Hereford at Saturday. However…

Palace have two games to play. In the last round will face direct opponent Sheffield Wednesday on the road. So, a win tonight would leave them in Championship. In last 9 home games have 2 wins and 7 defeats. Strikers Alan Lee and Calvin Andrews are back in contention after injury, left-back Lee Hills is out. Palace are unbeaten in the club's last four matches against West Brom.

.

.

.

The Baggies are second away team in the leagues (a point less than Newcastle) and are undefeated in last ten league games (2 draws, 8 wins)! The problem is they’re theoretically second and their motivation could be a cause of problems tonight. Few reasons for professional attitude. Di Matteo said he’ll field his strongest available team (not a single reason to believe him though). First game in the season they lost at home 0-1, Palace scored from only chance. They would like to reach Leicester’s record of 92 points (have 89 now) from 2003. The last but not the least, this is Championship not Serie A. Well, reasons are not so strong, but made this odd acceptable in my opinion. Jerome Thomas won’t play and I couldn’t find anyone else who is 100% out.

Palace desperately need a win which means will be very, very nervous from the start. Most of their goals come after shots from distance and set pieces (mentioned Lee is an ox in front and crucial man for this strategy). Which against WBA’s top defense could make a real frustration instead nervous. I think they won’t score tonight. One conceded goal would push them forward and open them too much. I'll take WBA -1 ah at 5.00, bookie is bet365! Correct result is 0-2.

.

P.s.: Yeah, yesterday's double was very easy. Bah...

PL thoughts and a bet

Utd will win,I’m pretty sure. But, at 1.45 it doesn’t worth. And whenever I think about -1ah got a picture of Neville vs. Bale on the flank and lost my appetite.
Bolton shouldn’t be at 1.50 against anybody.

My only bet from Premier is Arsenal game. End of their title ambitions wasn’t at Wigan, but after Spurs’ game when Wenger said “It’s all over”. Tragically for them they still had a chance. Don’t think they’re in a better mood today. Will have Fabianski at goal once again. He’s a disaster, is conceding flukes and makes all defense unsafe and nervous. Today will have to cope against Tevez-Bellamy-Adebayor. Citizens like to play against top sides. Only then they’re motivated. Which means dangerous. They won’t play for 4th spot, they’ll play to beat Arsenal away. Wouldn’t go so far to back their win, but see goals on both sides. Odds around 1.65-1.70 are not so great, but I’ll take it. Over.

Norwich City – Gillingham

The Canaries made a great victory in the previous round, beating Charlton away 1-0. Now, need just one point to be League One champions. Carrow Road has been sold out, players will get the medals and trophy after the game (if they draw at least, of course). Norwich are the best home side in the league, noticed 16 wins of 21 home games with impressive goal difference 46-20. Midfielder Wes Hoolahan is injured and will probably miss the game, but skipper and top goal scorer Grant Holt (24 goals) returns after serving a two-game ban. Boss Paul Lambert got one match touchline ban.

Gillingham made a first class surprise defeating Leeds last Saturday, scored three times for the first half an our (3-2 at the end). They made a distance from a relegation line (3 points with 3 rounds left) and can play with little less pressure. Good thing is in last two rounds, they’ll host the Saints (who gave up from play-off) and will visit Wycombe (will probably relegate till then) at the last day. So, they have very good chance to stay in the league. On the other hand, they’re the worst travelers in the third tier, noticed just six points (six draws) of 21 games on the road with shocking goal difference 13-44 and didn’t score in six of last seven! Skipper Barry Fuller faces surgery to repair a broken nose and is likely to miss out, defender Gowling serves the suspension and another defender Richards with a broken toe is long-term absentee.

Norwich is top class team, now finally can play without any sign of pressure and I expect a very good game from them. The Gills are simply too poor to spoil the celebration. Intention to maybe snitch a one point will probably bring them few more goals conceded. Bet is -1.25ah at 1.93, Pinnacle.

Newcastle – Ipswich

Newcastle are already champions. This is the chance to reach 100 points and finish a season without a single defeat at home (18 wins, 4 draws). They’re in the run of seven consecutive wins, while at St James have 9 wins in a row and all but one were with at least two goals margin. Stadium has been sold out, record attendance is expected of over 52.000 and after match is a title celebration. Boss Hughton hopes his Argentine duo Coloccini – Gutierrez will passed fit to play (I think they both would like to appear). Only certain missing is defender Fitz Hall. Newcastle have lost only one of the last 10 meetings with Ipswich, and are unbeaten in nine home league matches against them (5 wins, 4 draws).

Very difficult season for Town. Before the season start, they announced a battle for promotion. Instead that, they were stuck for the bottom most of the time. Players reacted badly on Keano’s hard temper, he has been accusing them for having no heart… They’re in the middle and should feel a relief as the nightmare is over. Mentioned Keano is without striker David Healy and midfielder Carlos Edwards. Town have scored on average every 12.83 attempts on goal this season (worst conversion rate in the league).

.

Newcastle will play for the fans and for own pleasure, they want to finish the season in style. Lack of pressure usually makes them even more dangerous. Town will give some resistance, but in their minds season is already over. Some of the players will play for contracts and scouts, but not for Keano. Bet is -1 ah, best offer is at StanJames 1.89.

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Atletico Madrid will take a slender Europa League semi-final first-leg advantage to Anfield next week thanks to a ninth-minute strike from former Manchester United front man Diego Forlan.
In truth, however, the hosts will be regretting several opportunities they missed to add to their advantage.
Liverpool, perhaps tired after their gruelling journey by land across Europe, will be grateful that they will not have to recover from a two or three-goal deficit following a poor game only redeemed by two good saves by goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
Both sides went into the match missing key strikers and opted for a lone man up front with Atletico's Argentine international Kun Aguero suspended while injury denied Liverpool's Fernando Torres the chance to play against his former club.
Atletico initially seemed to suffer the least from the absence of one of their key players.
The Spanish side decided to test their visitors from the whistle and it quickly became apparent that the Liverpool back four were not sure how to deal with ex-Arsenal man Jose Antonio Reyes and Simao operating down the wings, with Jose Manuel Jurado playing just behind Forlan.
Just nine minutes into the game, Jurado floated a cross to Forlan's head but, despite hardly making any contact, the Uruguayan international got a second chance when the ball fell to his feet and he poked it past Reina.
The Liverpool defence recovered from the initial shock and gradually started to pick up their men but little creatively was coming out of the midfield with captain Steven Gerrard having another indifferent game.
They were, however, unfortunate not to level when Yossi Benayoun beat Atletico goalkeeper David de Dea - but his effort was wrongly ruled out for offside.
But both sides were failed to make the best of their first-half free-kicks and corners with each team guilty of poor passing from set pieces as well as when going forward.
Finally, Liverpool started to come into the game with 10 minutes to go before half-time with, for the first time, Dirk Kuyt starting to find his range from out on the right flank.
However, Atletico almost went two in front four minutes before the break when their Czech defender Tomas Ujfalusi stripped Daniel Agger of the ball on the right side of the box and skipped past two weak challenges before, trying ambitiously to score from a narrow angle, putting the ball into the side of the net.
Atletico had another good chance just before the hour but a great save from Reina denied Simao, whose thunderous volley from an Ujfalusi cross looked on its way into the top corner.
Despite Benitez swapping the ineffective David Ngog for Netherlands winger Ryan Babel after 63 minutes, the Dutchman fared little better with the chances he was offered, squandering an excellent opportunity in front of goal four minutes after getting on the pitch.
The impressive Ujfalusi had another good effort with a rasping left foot shot 15 minutes from the end but Reina again showed why he is almost certainly going to be in Spain's World Cup squad, despite the plethora of options available to Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque.
The final minutes saw Liverpool - who have became the first English club to play in 16 European semi-finals - becoming increasingly desperate.
And Atletico responded with some crude challenges which saw Valera get a late yellow card.

Night of the limited offers

No way I'll take 1.65-1.70 for a home win in semi-final of Champions League. Germans are the obvious favorites, but with that price... I'll pass.

.

Odds on Aston Villa are around even, openning were 2.20. Don't like too much to back Villa on the road and if I didn't take it then, looks pointless to do it now. Maybe -0.25 at 1.80 (think StanJames) could be a good call. Will decide later.

.

Isn't too helpfull post. The biggest blog attendance, yesterday. Thanks. Hope some took Notts County without handicap.

A draw and a loss

Notts County 1 - 0 Rochdale

Notts County took a huge step towards sealing the League Two title with a deserved victory against second-placed Rochdale at Meadow Lane.
Both teams clinched automatic promotion on Saturday but Tuesday's result means that County are now four points clear of their rivals with a game in hand.
County have won 12 and drawn two since the appointment of Steve Cotterill as manager to climb above stuttering Dale at the top of the table.
And the home team undoubtedly created the better chances against Keith Hill's team, with the peerless Lee Hughes scoring the only goal with a shot from the edge of the box that Dale keeper Frank Fielding could not quite palm around the post.
Fielding did make several good saves, denying Graeme Lee, Delroy Facey and Hughes, while Neal Bishop struck the woodwork.
Dale boss Hill had ensured there would be plenty of spice to the contest with pre-match comments about their opponents' spending that drew a response from County chairman Ray Trew.
But on the evening Rochdale, with just one goal in their previous five games, struggled to break down their well-organised opponents.
Dale substitute Andy Howarth did come close to an equaliser but his thunderous 30-yard strike hit the crossbar.
Hill's side started the match confidently and at times played the brand of attractive football that has largely characterised their season but apart from Howarth's effort they failed to seriously threaten Kasper Schmeichel's goal.
Gary Jones shot wide from outside the box, while Jason Taylor missed with a difficult header and later saw a powerful shot blocked.
Notts were defensively well organised throughout and more direct in their approach, with the menacing Hughes their primary target.
Hughes had the ball in the net after 13 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside. However, there was no reprieve for Dale after a horrendous mix-up gifted an opening that the striker gratefully accepted with a precise strike.
The mistake came after Chris O'Grady and Taylor each waited for the other to collect the ball, allowing the alert Bishop to nip in and play Hughes through on goal.
Lee might have scored for County prior to Hughes's goal with a 14-yard strike that Fielding superbly saved low to his left, while shortly before the break Ben Davies ended a mazy run with shot that narrowly missed the target.
County continued to threaten after play resumed, with Ricky Ravenhill inches wide, Bishop striking the woodwork from the edge of the box and Facey forcing another good stop from Fielding.
But just minutes after coming off the bench, Howarth almost ended a mazy run with a sensational goal. Schmeichel was well beaten but the crossbar came to his rescue.
The irrepressible Hughes later turned a Dale defender and drew another good save from Fielding with a shot across goal - and there was no doubt that County seemed most likely to score again.
O'Grady might have scored an injury-time equaliser but his snatched effort missed the target.
.

Southampton 0 - 0 Oldham

Southampton's hopes of a swift return to the Championship ended as battling Oldham held out for a goalless draw.
Rickie Lambert's tame 30-yard free-kick was the closest either side came in a drab first half at St Mary's.
Adam Lallana had the first genuine chance in the second half but his strike at goal was blocked by a fine last-ditch challenge by Alex Marrow.
Oldham's Tom Eaves was denied by Kelvin Davies while home substitute Papa Waigo missed an open goal late on.

Notts County – Rochdale

Notts County are bringing to end one almost perfect season. They’re undefeated in 15 league games and have six wins in a row. Lately, their home games look like parties more than competitive games. Lee Hughes and company scored 12 goals in last three at home and don’t think they’ll stop just because they secured promotion in last round. Many league chairmen have accused Notts County for cheating (transfer embargo, salary cap), so this will be a nice opportunity to prove they’re not against second best club in division. Boss Steve Cotterill will name an unchanged side.

Rochdale also secured the promotion in the previous round. But, oppositely for County their run of results looks like a torturing. Before Saturday’s win (Northampton, 1-0 at home), they had four games without a win, three defeats and a draw, goal difference 0-8! In last two away games, noticed two defeats, vs. play-off chasers Chesterfield 0-2 and shocking one vs. bottom side Torquay 0-5! They reached the promotion first time after 69 years (or first time after 1969., not sure). Knowing the mentality of players in lower divisions they probably spent more time in the pubs than on the pitch training. However, boss Keith Hill has a choice to name the best squad and face a defeat, or to put fringe players, defend all game and try to spoil the celebration of home fans. I think he’ll choose the second solution.

Be free to accuse me for being greedy, but with a risk to stay short handed I’ll take this with a handicap. This is a bet of the day for me. Notts County -1 ah, 2.54 at bet365!

Southampton - Oldham Athletic

Saints are in a great run of results. They have seven wins and a draw of last eight competitive games, with a goal difference 21-7. It seems 10 points deduction made a positive impact in the dressing room and players started to play without any pressure. However, their chances to reach the play-off zone are not so big, but I think they’ll try to finish the job in style and will do all they can. In last round, they noticed hard fought victory with 10 men vs. Yeovil on the road with a goal in the 92th minute and it was additional moral boost. Alan Pardew will be without midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin who got a red card and earned a 4 matches suspension. Midfielder Antonio and strikers Barnard and Conolly are fit.

Oldham improved their results and they look safe with six points more than 21st Tranmere. They have just one defeat (Huddersfield, 0-2 away) of last five games and are undefeated in last three. But, their main problem is scoring goals. Oldham won 2-1 in last round against unmotivated Carlisle, but in previous six games scored just two goals. In the remaining rounds, beside S’ton, they’ll face Southend at home, Yeovil on the road and Charlton at home which means just a nightmare scenario could push them down to League Two. Boss Dave Penney will have all players available at St Mary's.

I think we’ll see one way traffic tonight. Southampton need a win and will attack from the start. Oldham will do what they do the best, defend with all players. With first conceded goal, their interest for this game will vanish. I predict home win with 2-3 goals margin. Odds have been raising and I think 1.91 at Pinnacle worth of a shot.
